A Hard Won Recovery from Crohn's Disease

Jonathon Boyle's Story

Though every patient with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's, Crohn's Colitis or Ulcerative Colitis) is different from the next, Jonathon Boyle and his battle with Crohn's Disease is one that in many ways is typical of the trials and tribulations patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease frequently suffer from. Diagnosed when still a child, Jonathon suffered with debilitating digestive disturbances, toxic, medically prescribed drugs that caused numerous ill side effects, repeated failed surgeries, massive weight loss, severe fatigue, weakness, pain, and disability.

What is not typical is the extraordinary courage and perseverance with which Jonathon and his Mother faced his dilemma. We refer to this at the Goldberg Clinic as “The Will to Get Well”. Suffering with his malady for over a decade while under medical care, (while his physicians painted a bleak future for him), did not stop Jonathon and his Mother from being intent on seeking a way for Jonathan to be delivered from his nightmare.

Having experienced the failure of the Medical Approach with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, the Boyles sought out realistic, natural, methods of restoring his entire health picture. This included reading about digestive issues in books written by Ms. Jini Patel.

Ms. Patel is a well-known writer and founder of the company “Listen To Your Gut” which offers excellent educational materials and products to assist patients with chronic digestive issues. Through Listen To Your Gut (www.ListenToYourGut.com), Jonathon found new hope and learned out about our clinic. Soon after he made the trip from Iowa to Georgia to consult at The Goldberg Clinic For Chronic Disease Reversal where we analyzed his case and developed a specific, individualized, plan for Jonathon to follow  to restore his health.

Jonathon’s journey back to dependable health is depicted in his before/after laboratory studies (see below). We salute both Jonathon and Mrs. Boyle for having the will to get well and for the success that they have achieved.

IgE Inhalent Allergy Panel

The IgE Inhalent Panel is an allergy test which evaluates serum IgE antibody levels to region-specific pollens and environmental inhalants. In Jonathon's case, we evaluated the 14 most common environmental inhalants specific to the midwest United States, the location in which he lived. The test revealed severe allergic responses to most environmental allergens in the region (see report to the right).

The relationship between pollen allergies and autoimmune/gastrointestinal disorders is generally ignored medically. This test result was a significant factor in Jonathon's case and led to his moving to Hallandale Beach, Florida. This change in climate along with the specific nutritional/lifestyle recommendations we made in Jonathon's case soon led to an increase in his weight from 115 pounds to 154 pounds (Jonathon is 6'2) and a significant overall improvement in his general health.

BACTERIAL OVERGROWTH
 (Before, October 23 2014)

Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a common gastrointestinal disorder that often underlies chronic gastrointestinal symptoms of mal-digestion and malabsorption, including bloating, gas, diarrhea, irregularity, and abdominal pain. It is frequently associated with allergic, autoimmune, and gastrointestinal disorders including Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's/Colitis).

Jonathon's initial test result revealed a severe bacterial overgrowth. The waste products produced by bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates are toxic and irritating to the gastrointestinal tract. This can contribute to inflammation, allergy and autoimmunity as seen in Jonathon's case.

BACTERIAL OVERGROWTH
(After, November 10, 2015)

Jonathon's Bacterial Overgrowth Test was monitored while working with us at the Goldberg Clinic.

Jonathon's test result showed significant improvement  His most recent test result (November 10th, 2015), is shown to the right. It is now normal.

STOOL MICROBIOLOGY
(Before, May 12, 2013)

The stool microbiology profile evaluates microbial balance within the Gastrointestinal Tract and is reflective of the environment within the gut. Jonathon's test result (see profile to the right) revealed the presence of numerous abnormal (yellow) and pathogenic flora (red) within the bowel. Antigenic substances produced by the abnormal and dysbiotic intestinal bacteria can contribute to the development of immune related disease including Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

STOOL MICROBIOLOGY
(After, October 19, 2014)

Improving the microbial balance within the GI Tract was critical to improving Jonathon's health. This involved taking steps to rest his bowel and improve his digestion. His follow up test result performed approximately one year later(shown to the right) revealed a significant reduction in abnormal and pathogenic flora which is reflective of a healthier environment within the GI tract and more balanced immune function.

IgG4 FOOD ALLERY PROFILE
(Before, May 12, 2013)

The IgG4 Profile is a food sensitivity test measuring the total IgG antibody levels. Jonathon's initial test report (shown to the right) revealed that he was sensitive to 22 out of the 30 foods tested. This is reflective of the significant digestive disturbances seen in Jonathon's case and indicates that his immune system was overactive when he first presented to the Goldberg Clinic.

IgG4 FOOD ALLERY PROFILE
(After, May 11, 2014)

As Jonathon's digestion and immune function improved during the course of his care at the Goldberg Clinic, his tendency towards allergies was reduced. This is evidenced by the significant reduction in the number of foods he was sensitive to as seen on his follow up allergy test performed one year later (see follow up test to the right).
